When are we going to say “No?”
This is the opinion of Dee Statum, SJU sophomore.
To CSB+SJU students:
As we begin the 2023 spring semester, I ask this one question—when are we going to say no?
No to being silenced when we speak about the disparities that different students experience in this part of rural Minnesota. When we are unable to properly feed ourselves across the two campuses. When students of color still face blatant racism by students, faculty and staff. When we are still asking for things that were promised to us and we are still lacking. When are we going to say no?
I ask this question because they have said no multiple times. They’ve said no to our protest of trying to keep multiple majors/minors at these institutions. They’ve said no to proper punishment of multiple faculty and staff members when acting unconscionable and merciless. They’ve said no to the proper formation of a reproductive freedom club being at these campuses. They’ve said no to producing proper protocols for promoting safe sex, a safe community and a safe environment for students. When are we going to say no?
I deem myself as an imperfect person, someone who has made mistakes repeatedly, and I continue to make mistakes over and over again. I can acknowledge the hurt that I have caused to many others, whether that be at these institutions or anywhere else. I have yet to see this same sentiment from the schools. From the years I have been here, and even when researching the two institution’s history, I have yet to see full acknowledgement of the mistakes that were made continuously. When are we going to say no?
I write this looking at the U.S. House of Representatives nominate candidates for Speaker of the House, and I asked this question based on the words of the gentlelady from Massachusetts. She explained what the GOP had said “NO” to for the past 2-3 years as they were passing legislation. Some of the legislation benefitted THE PEOPLE, and their nos are still valid? When are we going to say no?
As y’all look at what’s happening this semester and see the injustices happening around you, whether it be the institutions or in the greater community around you, say no! Educate, correct, discourage or whatever you may deem appropriate. But please say no. Get involved and say no.
