When the snow sticks on the ground, it becomes clear that winter is coming to Minnesota. With the colder months of the year, fashion is more about staying warm than style. However, that doesn’t always have to be the case. The winter trends for this season carry over from fall, adapting to the frigid air.

This year’s pattern seems to be geometric, covering new prints for the season.

From coats to shirts, it’s clear that a splash of color and patterns is in for the winter days. One trend that carried over from the fall would be the plaid skirts, a token to Clueless.

While living in more of a winter climate, partnering with some fleece-lined tights and boots should work for the early months of winter. Another callback to fall is the denim on denim look. Whether you love or hate the look, it’s back again for another season.

The final noteworthy item of this year is puffy jackets. All lengths seem to be popular, however, the longer lengths that go past the knees seem to be a popular choice this year.

The core colors for the season are a coconut cream shade, gray, soybean and a lovely olive green that will fill the stores. Surprisingly featured this year, statement colors consisting of bright hues are filling the rack, clearly trying to bring color to the gray season.

The color palette dominates the shows from the runways of higher fashion brands such as Versace, Prada and Gucci. A brisk blue that isn’t quite navy, a joyful yellow, green, bright pink and a gentle pink are just some of the colors you will see this season. So don’t be too shocked to see bright colors within stores this winter season.

Always be conscious of the weather. During the upcoming months, be sure to layer and stay warm. Function over fashion seems to be the overall look for CSB and SJU for the approaching season. With students running from place to place, winter coats, hats and mittens can be spotted all over campus. Additionally, the first snowfall of the season began the plethora of students bundled up prepared for the coming weather. Some wear plaid coats, and others wear long puffy jackets. Hoodies and leggings or sweatpants seem to be a classic piece for this campus. However, the trends of plaid and classic color palettes for this season cover the campus.

The winter weather shouldn’t trap everyone in a gray palette for the mood. Branch out and explore the new seasonal colors or stay warm and comfortable. On a college campus, fashion can look good and be functional when needed. To paraphrase what my professor reminded me, it is best to stay warm for the upcoming months, which is a good reminder for all.
