St. Joseph is home to a boutique that sits on the corner of College Avenue and West Minnesota street in a white building with golden letters displaying the name: Hudson and Co. The establishment opened just this summer in June.

Stepping inside, you are greeted by beautiful candles that line the walls, filling the shop. While looking around there are a wide variety of items.

Sweaters line the back wall, while displays hold room décor, other clothing sectioned off by colors and jewelry on a table. The clothing seems geared towards feminine style, and the sizes seem to depend on the type of clothing.

The sizing at Hudson and Co. depends on the item. Most sweaters run from an XS-L. The jackets in the stores had a more comprehensive section of sizes ranging from an XS-3XL. The selection of pants does not have much variety to choose from: the sizes are limited and, overall, the store had only a few selections to choose from.

According to a Hudson and Co. employee, the sweaters and clothing would be replaced once they run out of that item. A new article of clothing different from the last would go on the shelf once the boutique is out of an item. It’s unlikely to see that item again unless they get a new shipment in.

While I browsed the selections, I looked to see if some of the fall trends this year carried over into this small boutique.

I found a jacket that featured the bright blue popular right now. The racks of clothing covered the store with sage green, light blue, burnt orange and bright reds.

While shopping I bought a lovely blue coat that goes with this year’s color trend.

For college students, the prices are a bit expensive. They can range from $37-$79, depending on the type of clothing or fabric.

For most college students, a sweater that costs $79 isn’t ideal. The jacket I bought ended up being around $50, which is on the more expensive side for me.

A final thought on the store is that realistically it’s probably not in a college student budget. Since the boutique isn’t marketed towards students, it isn’t uncommon to hear from students that they haven’t been to the boutique. The price and limited gender binary in clothing are hard to work around.

However, the boutique does have other items such as stickers, candles and room décor at a more college-friendly price range.
