Ways to take healthy breaks while still keeping up with course work
This is the opinion of Rhianna Anya, CSB first year.
Being in college is hard. Many go from being a senior in high school with time for friends, fun activities, watching TV shows and having a scheduled balance within your life, to being overwhelmed with coursework and worrying about future careers. As a first year, my transition from high school to college was a bit rocky because I struggled to find ways to take a break from coursework. After my first semester, I found a routine for myself that allows me to keep up with things and people that I enjoy, while still challenging myself academically. Although it may seem difficult at first, finding the balance is possible if you give yourself the time.
One thing I found very helpful while doing homework is taking breaks. No matter if the break is five minutes or 30 minutes, breaks are a great way to get your mind off the task at hand. While I do my homework, every 30 minutes or so, I get up for five minutes to stretch, do random cleaning around my room, write out a list of things I have to do or just scroll on my phone. Although five minutes of scrolling on my phone can easily turn into 15 minutes, I find that when I take mental breaks like this, I eventually become more focused on completing my work.
I also like to watch my favorite TV shows or listen to my favorite music while doing my homework. It is okay to not do these things if you feel like they might distract you, but I find that the balance between watching a TV show and writing up a report, for example, makes the time go by faster.
Going on walks, especially here at CSB+SJU, is my favorite thing to do. Whether these walks are planned or spontaneous, they are a great way to keep my mind off coursework for a little bit. Sometimes, even going on walks alone while listening to my favorite music or podcast is something I find myself looking forward to. Especially with the nice weather coming up, this can be a good way to incorporate a healthy break in your routine.
If you’re struggling to find time to do these things, it is okay to seek help. Another thing that I love about CSB+SJU is not only the great counseling services that they offer, but the events that different clubs put on to provide a much-needed break for students. Seeking our support doesn’t always have to be in the form of scheduling a counseling session with one of the counselors here at school, although a great option, but it can come in the form of asking a classmate or friend for help on homework that you may find yourself struggling with.
Finding a healthy break from coursework may seem difficult, but it is crucial to take care of yourself during this time in our lives. Whether your break comes in the form of listening to your favorite music, going for a walk or asking a classmate for help, they will all benefit you in the end. Remember, it is always okay to take mental breaks and ask for help when you need it.
