Reflections on participation and involvement in college
This is the opinion of Katie Kukar, CSB ‘90.
Dear Bennie,
**“What do I wish I would have done differently during my time at St Ben’s?”**
I wouldn’t have done anything differently, but I would have added a study abroad program. I loved every trajectory I took and am surprised when I look back on everything I did do. St. Ben’s and St. Johns give you opportunities and support you don’t always get when you graduate. My St. Ben’s experience was jam-packed with everything I could fit in. I played sports, learned guitar, took 17 credits to get in that one extra fun class, played intramurals, coached volleyball at the prep school, took stats for the baseball team, videotaped the hockey team and ran the Health Advocates. I wish I had fought harder to study abroad. My friends did have unbelievable experiences and made lasting relationships. On a recent trip with one of my Bennie friends, our days in Salzburg had unforgettable memories for her. Since I didn’t have a study abroad, a good friend encouraged me to get a student work visa, and after graduating, we went to London. St. Ben’s gave me the confidence to go for it and live my dream of travel. I continue to see the world. If you fear that you might miss out on something in your college days, do whatever interests you. Life is more than a career; college is the time to try everything possible. Opportunities are at your fingertips at St Ben’s, which makes it special. Don’t let anything pass you by; if it scares you a little, you should definitely do it. Take advantage of the study abroad; traveling the world changes your perspective on life, people, politics and what you want for your life and love.
**“How did you choose the activities/clubs you participated in during college?”**
I chose activities I loved that had nothing to do with my major. I wanted to test the waters and see what was out there; I wanted to find my place, passion and joy. So, I tried everything I could fit into my schedule. I discovered so much about myself. I’m a hummingbird. My passion is finding new passions. I have learned new things wholeheartedly, but when those interests simmer, I’m off to explore new and exciting things. The expectations are that you need to be an expert in your field of study or career, but there’s always room to learn and explore. Now that technology is constantly exploding with new things, finding things to excite you is much easier. You have many options, directions and opportunities, so take advantage; many unique places, people, philosophies, viewpoints and music categories are ready to blow your hair back.
