Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

This is a column is brought to you by the CSB Senate’s Cultural Visibility Committee.

By The Record Staff Report · · 3 min read

The CSB Senate Cultural Visibility Community is very excited to bring you different topics that will allow you to learn about different cultures, campus events and outstanding students here at CSB/SJU. The goal of this column and this committee is to make all cultures on campus more visible and appreciated by the entire student body and campus community. This will be posted the second of every month. We hope you enjoy it and encourage you all to get involved. Let us know if there is something you would like us to talk about!

**Brief History**

This month we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Among the events celebrated during this month (Sept. 15 through Oct. 15) are the independence days of seven countries in Latin America. As diverse and different their cultures and people are, some may find it a bit surprising that seven of those countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile—celebrate their Independence Day within three days of each other. The first five countries observe Sept. 15 as their country’s birthday. As for Mexico and Chile, they celebrate their freedom on Sept. 6 and Sept. 18, respectively. On Independence Day, many of these countries celebrate within the community and gather for food and music.

**Proud of Your Culture: Student Spotlight**

Emily Romero ‘22:

Ever since I was little, I have always been proud of my Salvadorian heritage. I love the food, the music and the loving community. Growing up my grandmother taught me how to cook many Salvadorian dishes that one day I hope to pass onto my children. I am very thankful for my roots because it has made me the woman I am today. Being a Latina woman, to me, means being a strong independent woman. Lastly, coming from immigrant parents made me realize and appreciate how important it is to pass on our culture and to never forget where we came from.

**Upcoming Campus Events**

If you did not already know, this week is the Festival of Cultures. We hope you attended some of the events already. Oct. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. is the student showcase in Stephen B. Humphrey Theater at SJU. This showcase celebrates and recognizes diversity here at CSB/SJU through student performances and a cultural fashion show. The event will be streamed live. Come check out ELAC’s performance to show your appreciation and see what they are all about.

In addition, on Saturday there will be Spanish Mass at 6 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Chapel at CSB. This is an opportunity for all students to celebrate the Catholic mass in Spanish. Los Mayordomos is inviting and encouraging the community to close out the Festival of Cultures.
