Quarterback suffers season-ending injury

Last Saturday, Oct. 23, the St. John’s football team faced Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter. The Johnnies faced a set back in the third quarter when starting quarterback Aaron Syverson fractured his fibula.

Syverson was hit by two Gustavus defenders and his leg was crushed on the weight, according to Fasching.

Second string quarterback senior Chris Backes came into the game and threw three touchdowns for the Johnnies. Despite Syverson’s injury, the team does not expect to lose any momentum.

“We have a saying, next man up. Chris will take over and the team will rally around him and we expect that we will not miss a beat. Our expectations have not changed,” Fasching said.

Backes entered the final quarter of the game with full confidence in his team and a cool and collected mentality.

“When I was put into the game what was going through my mind was just to stay calm, stabilize the ship and let our players make plays,” Backes said.

While the team needs to adjust without their starting quarterback, the road to success does not stop here. The expectation of another MIAC title and a long run in the NCAA playoffs still stand. Fasching credits his team for always rising to the occasion.
