The impact of the Benedictine Values on post-graduation life
This is the opinion of Paul Gelbmann, SJU alumus ‘82.
As a prospective student, the outstanding education and amazing campuses attracted me to attend CSB+SJU.
As a freshman and throughout my four years at CSB+SJU, I became aware of the Benedictine Values through observation and conversation with our FRs and various faculty, involvement in campus life and the homilies of noon Masses. I learned the foundation of these values and practices had roots going back to sixth-century Italy, which is a long time to develop and perfect. The pioneer monastic members of St. Ben’s and St. John’s embraced work and prayer as they created “a place” to practice, teach and share these values while providing life needs to the rural communities of Stearns County.
We are the fortunate guests of their astounding work, extraordinary care, love and respect. The values are imprinted on the students, and the practices continue through us. Those with the good fortune open our eyes, ears, heart and mind to the wisdom inherent in these Benedictine values and practices. As a graduate of CSB+SJU, I have the rich fortune and joy in these acquired values that grow and guide my life. These values are related to nearly all aspects of our humanity. Lifelong learning, self-sufficiency, accountability and humility in all we do. Moderation, authenticity, welcoming hospitality, community affiliations, meditation and prayer are a few of the values I witnessed, learned and practiced.
For your sake and your community’s sake, open yourself to these values. You will be blessed and pleased throughout your whole life.
