Kindness: a non-negotiable value

This is the opinion of Wes Kirchner and Evan Mattson, SJU juniors.

By Wes Kirchner, Evan Mattson · · 4 min read

Kindness. Kindness is one of the few non-negotiables in the world, especially here in our CSB and SJU community. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it is also central to the Benedictine Values that we as CSB and SJU community members are keen to live by every day. Our purpose with this opinion article is to give the members of this community 10 actionable steps to work towards the Benedictine Values and hopefully create a kinder community.

**Put Down Your Phone—Moderation**

Putting down your phone will enable you to connect so much more with the community and help you create a healthier relationship with your device. We would suggest simply reducing your screentime by 30 minutes a day as a first step and use that time to keep your eyes up while walking around campus or talk to your newfound friend on the Link.

**Take Your Trash Out—Stewardship**

When you are sitting in McGlynn’s, instead of leaving garbage at the table, clear it. While you’re walking around campus, pick up the litter fluttering in the wind. Taking these steps will show that you take pride in our community and care about the spaces that we currently occupy.

**Use Manners—Respect for Persons**

Say “please” and “thank you” in every action. It shows appreciation and respect for persons.

**Hold the Door Open—Hospitality**

We are famous for holding doors open here at CSB and SJU. Let’s continue this tradition by holding the door open, saying thank you and extending a greeting to the person behind you. By doing so, we will be creating a more hospitable environment where all feel welcomed and appreciated.

**Talk to Employees—Dignity of Work**

Every day, employees at CSB and SJU clock in for work. It may be driving the Link bus between the campuses, crafting your sub sandwiches or cleaning the floors we walk on. The employees work endless hours to make our community livable and wonderful because they take pride in their work. Take the time to stop by, talk with them and let it be known that you appreciate them–I am certain they would love some student interaction. It will make their day even better.

**Go to Community Events—Listening**

Every week, there are several events on campus. From the Johnnie Development Institiute to the Peer Resource Program, people are working every day to provide events and training to improve our experiences in the community. Attend events, listen to what is being said and use what you learn in your daily life. It is better to move forward with the latest ideas than staying in the past.

**Greet your Neighbor—Community Living**

Getting to know your neighbors in the dorms, apartments and offices will create a stronger sense of community. We would encourage you to get to know someone new on your floor or even sit with someone new in the Reef or Gorecki. These may seem like radical steps, but they are vital to expanding your social circle and strengthening your ties to our community.

**Take Time for Yourself—Stability**

This may be the most important point on this list. Be kind to yourself. We would suggest that you find a self-care routine that will enable you to be kind to others. We would suggest spending time in the Arboretum, having established times for meals and finding hobbies to turn to when you need time for yourself.

**Advocate for Change—Justice**

Something you would like to see changed on campus that benefits the community? Talk to your student senators, meet with an administrator or go to a club leader. The CSB and SJU community strive for justice and equity within our communities, and it all starts with you.

**Call your Loved Ones—Peace**

We forget to call those we love or care about–it’s an honest mistake we all make. Take time to give them a call to maintain peace with them and yourself. Maybe even reach out to someone you have disconnected from for a long time and reach out. True friendships are long-lasting.

As we said, these are just some actionable steps in becoming a kinder community by using the Benedictine Values. We would like to acknowledge that many of these are surface-level understandings of the Benedictine Values, and we would encourage you to read up on them and think of ways to incorporate them into your daily lives.
