The St. Ben’s lacrosse team triumphed over Augsburg with a 23-3 victory last Friday. This performance was marked by two players, sophomore Sami Hackley and first-year Lizzie Schrubbe, who broke school game records.

Hackley scored nine goals in Friday’s game, breaking her own previous school record of seven goals in one game.

She now has a team-high 31 goals for the season.

Holding this record means a lot to Hackley, especially as an underclassman in a new program. This is CSB lacrosse’s second season as an established program.

“I love being able to hold this title, and it is a personal goal to keep pushing myself and my teammates to set a higher one,” Hackley said.

Hackley says that during the game, none of the players keep track of who gets each goal or assist.

“This mindset is something that we have talked about so many times. No matter the score or the team, we have to focus on our game and our style of play, and we can look at the points once the game is over,” Hackley said.

Schrubbe delivered a record-breaking performance of 10 points in a game, beating her previous record of nine. Her 10 points consisted of a career-high five goals and five assists. She now leads CSB with 47 points (20 goals and 27 assists).

Schrubbe was nervous about joining the team as a first-year, but she quickly connected with her teammates.

“The returners are so supportive in every way, which allows the team to thrive together. By this I’ve grown as a team player, which is one of the most important aspects in the game of lacrosse,” Schrubbe said.

The point that allowed Schrubbe to pass her previous record was an assist to Hackley, reinforcing Schrubbe’s belief that her role on the team is giving assists.

“This moment was very special to me because that assist also allowed Sami to pass her goal record. Our connection on the field is a connection I have never felt before throughout my years of playing lacrosse. Passing our records at the same time was an amazing feeling for both of us,” Schrubbe said.

During the game, Hackley and Schrubbe knew that at some point the records would be set, but they focused on playing as a team. According to Hackley, they never forced a pass or shot to achieve the records but instead tried to find the open player.

“During the game, Lizzie and I had no idea when we would set our new records, but after every goal scored, Lizzie and I had the biggest smiles on our faces,” Hackley said.

Although setting individual program records are milestones for Hackley and Schrubbe, they attribute their success to the strength of the team.

“Everyone else puts in the same amount of work, but only a few of us get the recognition due to the goals and assists. These new records are set because of all of us as a team, and we wouldn’t be able to have this much success without the hard work and dedication that is put in from Chloe Lewis in net, our strong defensive core, our offensive unit and supportive coaching staff,” Hackley said.

Head coach Patrick Crandall agrees that individual statistical accomplishments are a result of a competitive and cohesive team.

“Sami and Lizzie have significantly contributed to the success of the team this year. These records and statistics mean a lot for the team and showcase the success the team has had thus far,” Crandall said.

The two program records give the team momentum going into the remainder of the season.

“These records are sound indicators that the team is continuing to build momentum for the end of the regular season and as we head into the MLC playoffs. I am very proud of these two players and very proud of the team that is helping these two players achieve those statistical records,” Crandall said.
