Senior Emily Renner, sophomore Maggie Roth and the CSB golf team competed in the MIAC Golf Championships at Royal Golf Course in Lake Elmo, Minn. As a team, the Bennies finished fifth out of 10 teams on day three. As the season winds down, the Bennies will look forward to a new start next year that begins with a training trip in Arizona.

Head coach Daryl Schomer was pleased with his team’s leadership and play from Roth and Renner.

“We did a nice job and stayed positive. I was very pleased with how the team handled the course mentally. We never gave up at a very challenging course. In the final rounds of the tournament, we were nine holes behind Gustavus Adolphus and ended up coming back seven shots,” Schomer said.

Renner finished in the top 10 and showed her senior leadership by making shots and staying on top of her game.

“Emily is one of the calmest and coolest people I have ever coached. She handles adversity and never gets down on herself. The positivity she brings is contagious. Renner always leads by example,” Schomer said.

Schomer was also very proud of Roth, as she finished 16th in the MIAC championships and recorded a personal best.

The team also achieved one of their personal goals by sneaking by Macalester in the tournament as they got out to an early lead on the Scots on day one of the three-day tournament.

“One of our main goals early in the season in preseason meetings was to beat Gustavus and Macalester, and we ended up doing that. We are very proud to achieve such successful results,” Roth said.

“Maggie Roth recorded her season-high personal best; she handles herself very well. Maggie has improved a lot this season. I am happy with the kind of golf she has been playing and how she continues to develop,” Schomer said.

The team will have to figure out a way to regroup following a loss due to graduation.

“We will have a very young team for next year as we lose Emily [Renner]. We need to focus on what we can do to get better. This season, we had numerous personal bests and will travel to Arizona for a spring training trip,” Schomer said about the outlook of next season.

Renner and Roth were happy with how they finished the MIAC tournament. They have placed in the conference championships for five years in a row.

With Renner being a senior and Roth a sophomore, they both will have different futures going forward. Renner will be graduating but Roth looks forward to the new group that will be brought in for next year.

“The team has been great. We have had some very successful weekends. I love this team and love competing, and I will miss playing the game I love,” Roth said.

Roth thinks the future will be bright and is optimistic about the spring season and the next time the Bennies will step on the links.

“We are all going to miss Emily she has been great with boosting team morale. We hope to get new recruits and continue to shoot low scores,” Roth said.

The two athletes also commented about the Arizona training trip that Schomer touched on.

“We are a tight knit group. We are all super close, and I think the Arizona trip really will help us come together,” Roth said.

The Bennies are excited to get back on the course as the spring season begins later in the year.
