Wet Leg’s debut self-titled album has been much anticipated since they released their first single “Chaise Longue” in June of last year.

National Public Radio ranked “Chaise Longue” the second best song of 2021. And on April 8 Wet Leg graced us with their first album.

Wet Leg is an indie-rock band from the Isle of Wight in England. The band was founded in 2019 by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers.

Wet Leg’s music is perfect for the senior girls who want to make the most of the rest of the school year, but who are also super sad about it.

I am a real sucker for upbeat music with depressing lyrics, and that is what this album is.

The first song of the album is called “Being in Love.” The song isn’t about being in love, it is about being okay with being anxious and depressed because that is what love feels like.

Now, I am very much against musicians normalizing depression and anxiety because it isn’t normal.

However, because the music itself it upbeat and it provides a sense of hopefulness.

The lyrics in this album are odd. “Pitchfork” columnist Laura Snapes wrote: “Their lyrics cringe with embarrassment on behalf of anyone deluded enough to be in a band, with their warm beer and crap patter and arty parties. It’s often said that their home of the Isle of Wight lags 20 years behind the rest of the UK, and Wet Leg’s suffocating social circle sounds straight out of 2005.” I somewhat agree with this statement. Their lyrics are very similar to Lorde’s in her album Pure Heroin.

Lorde sang about her life in New Zealand while Wet Leg is singing about their life in the Isle of Wight.

For both Lorde and Wet Leg, their music provides a sense of nostalgia.

Wet Leg’s debut album quickly topped to number one in the charts in the UK and Australia.

I would recommend listening to this album if you are feeling nostalgic and melancholy because the school year is ending but you also want to go out and have a good time.

I would give this album a solid 8/10.
