The Record staff brings home ten individual awards and best in state
Last Thursday seven staff members of The Record attended the Minnesota Newspaper Association's Better Newspaper Contest in Minneapolis. They won best overall and placed in ten different catergories including local breaking news story and photo story.
For the second year in a row, The Record has been named the best college newspaper in the state of Minnesota.
The Minnesota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, held as part of the 158th Annual Convention and Trade show, awarded The Record with first place in general excellence for the 2023-24 academic year.
“I know I speak for all of us here at The Record when I say what a huge honor this is,” The Record’s editor-in-chief Kayla Anderson said. “I’m grateful to our advisor Kelly Smith and all our editors, writers and photographers – this is possible because of them.”
Seven past and present staff members of The Record attended the awards ceremony at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest in Brooklyn Park on Jan. 30 to accept the top prize, defending their title of best in state from the previous academic year, 2022-23.
“I was super excited when I found out we won for the second year in a row,” The Record’s spring 2024 editor-in-chief Kelly Kieser said. “Every member of our staff, past and present, has brought us to this success, and I’m so proud of each one of them.”
In addition to the top award for general excellence, the staff took home 10 individual awards in the following categories: local breaking news coverage, government/public affairs reporting, investigative reporting, business story, arts and entertainment story, sports story, feature photo, photo story and editorial.
These individual awards were presented to current staff members Summer Langva and T Meier, current students Joel Makem Razinger and Ella Carlson, and CSB+SJU alumni Jacob Gathje, Eileen Otto, Molly Pults, Landon Peterson, Kelly Kieser and Ugbad Abdi.
“Our staff is so proud to be part of a long-standing legacy of exceptional people that make this paper what it is,” Anderson said. “These awards validate all our dedication and hard work, but it also motivates us to get better and better with every issue.”
