Students receive multiple first-place Student Production Emmy Awards

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored SJU junior Nick McGrane, Extending the Link and Johnnie Bennie Media with awards in student production. All three won first-place awards. There were seven nominations for CSB+SJU groups and individuals.

It was a historic year for media production at CSB and SJU in 2022, and the recent Upper Midwest Student Production Awards proved it.

Extending the Link, Johnnie Bennie Media and SJU junior Nick McGrane were recently honored with Student Production Emmy Awards from the Upper Midwest Emmy Foundation, part of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. CSB and SJU’s four winners were honored for their exceptional work in video and television.

Extending the Link received first place in the Public Affairs/Community Service category for their production, “Diverse Bodies, Beautiful Minds: Voices of Disability Activism.” Current and former students Alexander Morales-Garcia, Grace Savard, Allie Sia Su, Regan Dolezal, Kavin Downes, Logan Woods, Charlie Matuska, Maeve Miley, Nick McGrane, Payton Reece and Elijah Browne were honored.

Johnnie Bennie Media received first place in the Arts and Entertainment/Cultural Affairs category for their production, “Behind the Scenes with the Collegeville Dropouts.” Nick McGrane, Josh Ehlen, De’Marco Walton and Jose Ochoa were honored. Johnnie Bennie Media also received first place in the Music Video category for their production, “Where is My Mind by Collegeville Dropouts.” Josh Ehlen, De’Marco Walton, Cole Milz, Collin Kyro, Zach Tallman, Jose Ochoa and Chenxu Yu were honored.

SJU senior Nick McGrane received first place in the Video Essay category for his production, “For the Sake of a Single Poem with George Maurer.”

Seven total productions from on-campus individuals and groups were nominated, rounding out a successful year of video production at CSB and SJU. The Upper Midwest Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is dedicated to honoring the work of exceptional video and television production, particularly by college students. The membership organization, which spans North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin, also aims to provide professional development for the next generation of television professionals.
