Breaking down some of the facts about the complexities of the Israel-Palestine conflict
This is a Letter to the Editor from Rhianna Anya, Brett Lund, Isabella Dominguez, Sumia Ali, and Chloe Lewis
The Israel-Palestine conflict is deeply connected with historical, religious and territorial disputes. It is difficult to arrive at one solution for all in this situation without facing complexities while doing so. This conflict has started a serious humanitarian crisis that is affecting many Palestinians throughout the West Bank, Gaza Strip and surrounding neighborhoods. The blockage that has been issued in Gaza has led to a lack of necessities such as food, water and medical care. The U.S. has maintained an alliance with Israel by providing a substantial amount of financial and political support throughout this conflict, and the Biden administration has since then agreed to a two-state solution to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which is affecting millions.
Although highlighted in recent news and media, the Israel/Palestine conflict can be traced back to the 1920s. Throughout the 1920s-1950s, conflict arose between both Israel and Palestine due to the United Nation’s plan to make them two separate Arab states. Throughout this time, tens of thousands of lives have been taken, leading to the displacement of thousands. The period from 1947 to 1977 is the key historical start to the Palestinian and Israeli conflict. It began with the UN’s partition plan of 1947, which led to the establishment of Israel and started conflicts with the neighboring Arab countries. The UN believed the displaced Jewish people of Europe deserved a country where they could start over. However, they did not consider what this could mean for the people of Palestine. This started the Arab Israeli War of 1948-1949 and the six-day War of 1967. These conflicts reshaped the region’s geopolitical landscape. The displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians created a refugee crisis that continues today. Therefore, the years 1947–1977 marked the consolidation of significant events in history and factors that continue to impact the Israel–Palestine conflict and the ongoing search for regional peace.
The current Israel Palestine conflict is one that should not be taken lightly. The conflict started Oct. 7, 2023, and continues today. Most of the war has taken place in Gaza’s Strip. Many lives have been lost in this brutal war. In February, after almost 20 weeks (about four and a half months) of the war, almost 30,000 total people have died on both Israeli and Palestinian sides. This conflict has turned into a controversial topic. There have been many pro-Israel and pro-Palestine protests across the world, especially in the United States. News has been covering protests happening across the nation.
There is no winner in this situation because the fact of the matter is that war is taking place and people are losing their lives. As of right now, the role of the United States is unclear, but the nation is indirectly involved since funding for medical aid in the Gaza strip and Israel has taken place. A lot of other nations are also indirectly involved, such as Brazil, China, France, Germany and Egypt. This conflict has spread beyond Israel and Hamas. If an intervention does not take place soon, this could become a wider conflict and countries could become directly involved.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas goes way beyond anything that can be put into words and is complex beyond belief. A lot of misinformation about the war is being spread on social media, so when reading information on social media, be sure to fact-check it with factual services like a newspaper.
