Fashion choices tell us about people’s identity, individuality

Why should I care about fashion? Why does it matter? It is simply another thing that requires time and effort. Why should I think about others’ fashion? What do I gain?

While the time and effort piece are true, fashion is at the foundation of who we are humans. Fashion tells us several helpful things about who we fundamentally are. For some, their daily attire looks like leggings and sweatshirts or sweatpants and a vintage t-shirt.

Even though these outfits seem simple, we can learn about the person wearing the attire. Maybe, someone wears leggings because they feel a little more put together when they leave their room every morning, or maybe the person wearing the vintage T got it from their grandfather who recently passed away.

Most pieces of clothing we choose to wear have a story and meaning behind them. Someone is wearing a new piece they love and could not wait to put on that morning. Someone else is wearing clothes that allow them to feel hidden on their gloomy day.

Clothes, whether we choose to or not, represent the person we chose to be that day. It displays our stories. It shows others how we are feeling that day and our journey to getting to the present. That is why you should care about fashion. It is not a requirement to know the current trends or the latest drops from New York Fashion Week. Those things are not necessary.

However, it is important to notice the little things about others, such as the vintage T or matching set. At the end of the day, those little fashion choices show us a glimpse of someone’s story. If we can harness those observations about others, we build a sense of community without even knowing it. That is why fashion matters.
