Top teams in the SEC face off on Saturday

I know some people have already started listening to Christmas music (you know who you are), but there’s still plenty of college football left this fall.
This upcoming Saturday will be a weekend to remember. College GameDay is making its way down to Athens, Ga. for the clash of orange and red. It’s the battle of the last two unbeaten teams in the Southeastern Conference. Facing off in a showdown of SEC East divisional foes, Tennessee hopes to stifle the Georgia Bulldogs on their home turf in Sanford Stadium.
The rivalry has seen its fair share of blowouts and thrillers over the years. The Dawgs currently hold a five-game win streak over the Vols dating back to 2017. This year means more, as it will be the first top-five matchup between both teams, as Tennessee is ranked No. 1 and Georgia checked in at No. 3 in the first CFP rankings that came out on thie past Tuesday.
This game is all about the storylines. Second-year head coach Josh Heupel has turned his team around after going 7-6 in his first season. He has his Vols rolling out to a hot 8-0 record after seeing his goalposts carried out of Neyland Stadium and thrown into the Tennessee River by exuberant Tennessee faithful after downing No. 3 Alabama in Knoxville.
On the other side of the field is Kirby Smart, who is in his seventh year as the Dawgs’ head coach. Smart was finally able to get over the hump last year, winning the 2022 National Championship and defeating his former coach, Nick Saban, for the first time in five tries.
Coming off their commanding win over the Crimson Tide in the chip, the Dawgs have picked up right where they left off, rifling off eight straight wins to a perfect 8-0 record. Tennessee is led by two talented stars: quarterback Hendon Hooker and wideout Jalin Hyatt. Hooker and Hyatt have the Vols ranked No. 1 in the FBS offensively in total points scored and touchdowns as well as No. 2 in total yards per play.
The Vols have punished defenses all year with their up-tempo offensive system that leaves secondaries confused and exhausted. The fact that Tennessee is No.1 in the country in total offense at 553 yards per game partially has to do with the success of the duo backfield in Jaylen Wright and Jabari Small. Both running backs help to take pressure off of Hooker during crucial drives down the field.
This weekend will be the litmus test for how the No. 1 offense in the nation matches up with one of the best defenses in the country. The Bulldogs lost the majority of their defensive starters last year as five Georgia defenders were taken in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, setting a new record. This year’s Junkyard Dawgs might not be as flashy and dominant as last year’s squad, but they’re hungry to prove their worth.
The likes of Kelee Ringo, Jalen Carter and Jamon Dumas-Johnson have the Bulldogs defense ranked No. 2 in the FBS in scoring, allowing only 10.5 points per game. The Vols offense matched up against the Dawgs defense should be the highlight of the game and an insight into whether or not Tennessee’s fast-paced offense can succeed against a formidable defensive presence.
Let’s not forget though that, although Georgia has always been known as a defensive powerhouse, their offense has made massive strides this year. UGA super-senior quarterback Stetson Bennett, also known as “The Mailman,” has commanded control of this balanced offense nicely. The former walk-on’s ability to avoid pressure and throw on the run has dramatically improved throughout his career.
The three headed rushing attack led by Kenny McIntosh, Daijun Edwards and Kendall Milton has given the Dawgs a consistent presence on the ground with 17 total touchdowns this year. Through the air, the tight end package of Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington has taken advantage of secondaries with big gains off play-action designs.
So, why does this game matter? I think Smart said it best to the Georgia fans. He said, “If you can [still] talk when you leave, you didn’t yell enough.” The atmosphere inside Sanford Stadium on Saturday afternoon is going to be electric. Both teams have their sights set on making it to the College Football Playoff and playing for a national championship. The only problem is that they are on a collision course with each other. The stakes are high in this game, and both teams will be fighting to remain undefeated.
The winner of this weekend’s game becomes the last unbeaten team in the conference and controls their destiny in the SEC East. They would then likely face off against Alabama in Atlanta for the SEC Conference Title.
Hopefully, I’ve convinced you to gather up your fellow college football fanatics and turn the TV on to CBS at 2:30 p.m. CT and watch two juggernauts duke it out in a historical matchup. Although Tennessee’s win against Bama was respectable, I still think that the Bulldogs will pull through and come out on top in true nail-biter fashion in front of a sellout crowd at Sanford. May the best team win, and Go Dawgs.
