Opinion

Get outside and take advantage of both our beautiful campuses

This is the opinion of Logan Woods, SJU senior.

In counting down the days that I have left on campus, I find myself trying to soak it all in. Many will attempt to savor their time with roommates, classmates and close friends, but I encourage you to savor your time outside. With the ever-growing access to technology and friends far away, the connection to nature is what you may miss the most.

I encourage you to take in the wondrous beauty that the arboretum has to offer. Marvel at the giant oak trees and the little acorns they drop. Take notice of the scotch pine trees and their bark that shines at the top during golden hour. Walk through the sugar bush full of maple trees that have provided maple syrup to our community for years and be thankful. Observe the sounds and sights of life in the arb. Gray and red squirrels alike coming out and rummaging through the leaves. Hear the endless bird calls, from the Canada goose’s honk to the blue jay’s squawk and the chirps from cardinals and sparrows alike. Welcome back our state bird, the common loon, as they make their way back to our lakes. Allow yourself to feel calm near the now-open water. The waves crash along with any stress you may carry.

Be present. Feel the cool water on your skin as you reach your hand in the water. If you are brave enough, immerse your entire body in the chilly waters before we depart. Go for a walk and be curious. Be aware of your surroundings and relax. Sit in a hammock away from the construction noise. As our time dwindles, the weather becomes more and more agreeable. So go outside. Be present and enjoy these beautiful lands while you’re still here.
