The 66th Annual Grammy Awards were held on Feb. 4. The night was full of action-packed performances from stars and exciting appearances from people’s favorite artists.
Hosted by well-known comedian Trevor Noah, the award ceremony was viewed by millions of music lovers from all around the world.
Winning the most Grammys of the evening, indie-pop artist Phoebe Bridgers took home four awards, one for her solo music and three with fellow members of her band, Boygenius. This was Bridgers’ and Boygenius’ first-ever Grammy award won, and to win three in the same evening is monumental.
Boygenius has had a significant impact on the indie-pop genre within the last few years. Bridgers’ and Boygenius’ music is unique in the sense that no other artist has been able to replicate their vibe, which emphasizes the importance of their wins this year.
Throughout the evening, there were performances from Travis Scott, Olivia Rodrigo, Tracy Chapman & Luke Combs, Billie Eilish, SZA, Burna Boy and more. The diverse range of genres and performances made the 2024 Grammys memorable for many.
Tracy Chapman, original singer of the song “Fast Car,” made a special appearance alongside Luke Combs to perform the hit. This performance was one of the most talked about of the evening. Chapman has maintained a low profile over the past few years, surprising fans with her performance at the 66th Grammys. Chapman’s decision to perform at this year’s award show highlights the significance and importance of the event to the music industry.
As always, with award shows comes controversy. Fans on multiple social media platforms remarked their opinions on the rightful winners in the categories titled “Best New Artist” and “Album of the Year.”
Many believed that Lana Del Rey should have won the Grammy for “Album of the Year” for her studio album titled “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd,” an album filled with Lana Del Rey’s signature indie-americana style.
Many also believed that up and coming indie-folk artist Noah Kahan should have won the award for “Best New Artist,” as he has made a significant impact and shown significant growth within the music industry over the past year.
I am a fan of both Noah Kahan and Lana Del Rey, and as much as I love their music and their contributions to the industry, I understand the cutthroat competition and nature of award ceremonies like The Grammys.
Every year, the Grammys unites lovers of all kinds of music for a night filled with monumental performances, deserved awards and fangirling over artists. The 66th Grammy Awards showcased the talent and diversity in the music industry. The awards serve as a testament to the ever-changing industry yet continue to showcase and celebrate the creativity of musicians from a diverse array of backgrounds. I look forward to next year’s awards, as I know that there will be great competition between phenomenal artists.
