Roy Cooper for POTUS

This is the opinion of Cormac O'Connor, SJU first-year.

With the 2022 Midterm elections over, the 2024 election season is about to begin, and it will be upon us before we know it. As someone who is a political science major and enjoys participating and keeping up to date on election seasons and the candidates running for U.S. Senate, U.S. House and President of the U.S. (POTUS), I knowhere are many promising candidates qualified to run for these offices. But, let’s talk about a presidential candidate that stands out to me, one you’ve probably never heard of. His name is Roy Cooper.

Roy Cooper is the current governor of North Carolina (2017-present). He was the attorney general of North Carolina for 16 years (2001-2017), and a member of the North Carolina State Senate for 10 years (1991-2001), four of those years serving as majority leader (1997-2001). Cooper was also a member of the North Carolina State House (1987-1991). For those of you that are curious why I think Roy Cooper is a qualified individual to run for president, here is why.

Roy Cooper would be 67 years old if he chose to run for POTUS in 2024, which I think is the perfect age to run. I fear that younger candidates do not have enough experience to lead the U.S., and anyone in their late 70s or 80s I don’t believe would have the stamina or energy to do an effective job as POTUS, as it is a daunting task and not a job for the faint of heart. Another reason Cooper is qualified to run for POTUS is because of the amount of experience he has had in the political arena. Cooper has a little under 36 years of continuous service to North Carolina under his belt, and I believe that someone with that much experience truly has a lot to offer as a potential POTUS. As attorney general of North Carolina, he has won bipartisan praise over his handling of the 2007 Duke Lacrosse Case, and Cooper has long been a champion of bipartisanship, working with the North Carolina General Assembly to pass bipartisan legislation into NC state law that bettered North Carolina, and improved North Carolinians lives.

In 2016, Cooper challenged incumbent North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory in the election for governor and defeated him by a little over 10,000 votes. Since becoming Governor in 2017, Cooper has signed multiple landmark bills into law in North Carolina, such as “Brittany’s Law,” which states that a homicide is to be considered first degree murder in North Carolina law if the murderer was determined to have murdered a victim with malice and if the defendant has been convicted of domestic violence or stalking of the victim. Cooper has also championed installing more cameras on school buses to try and reduce cars from illegally passing school buses and potentially endangering children’s lives.

These reasons, among many others, are reasons I believe that Cooper would make an amazing POTUS. He champions bipartisanship; he has appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds (among other things); he has plenty of political experience, which I believe is essential if someone were to be elected president; and he has worked to pass laws that will better the everyday lives of North Carolinians. I believe he could do the same for the U.S. if he is elected POTUS.

With the 2024 Presidential election quickly approaching, there have been rumblings as to who could possibly run for president. Cooper has been one of the names included in those rumblings. Whether Cooper decides to run or not, he is someone that I think would be a fantastic president and someone who can reach across the aisle and work with everybody to find a solution to better the everyday lives of the American people. As 2024 gets closer and the presidential race gets clearer, we shall see if Cooper decides to run. Regardless of his choice, Cooper is a politician that is respectable, tries his best to get things done by working in a bipartisan way and works to better the people of North Carolina.
