The 2023 Met Gala lacks inclusivity but continues to be entertaining

The the last week of school is a great opportunity to write about the famed Met Gala, where stars come out and try their best to match the theme for the season. This year’s theme is in honor of “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” As someone who loves fashion, I felt like I should know more about Lagerfeld, but I didn’t. The main highlight is he was a considerable influence within Couture. However, in my personal opinion, he was an interesting choice to go with due to his lengthy past tone-deaf comments and controversy as a designer. The main connection between him and the Met Gala was that before his death, he was a large donor and a friend to Anna Wintour, one of the people in charge of the Met Gala.
On top of that, the Met Gala as a concept is somewhat outdated considering how allusive it seems to the outside source. As our generation grows, the Met Gala and the invite list don’t change too much. The first influencer to attend the Met Gala was blogger Chiara Ferragni in 2015, and then more recently, after Liza Koshy, a YouTuber, attended in 2018, the guest list seemed to open up a bit more. A picture that always stands out to me is seeing the mass group of people behind roadblocks looking into the red carpet area showing this separation. I always thought it would be good to progress the Met Gala and create a better environment, such as letting student designers appear and design. This would help get younger names into the lineup. The themes recently have been lacking, and it would be interesting to use themes that can be used to bring in charities.
The Met Gala has so much more potential; these are just my ideas. In summary, the Met Gala is an over-top event with over-the-top fashion and most likely will stay that way until Vouge and Wintour change it. Now all that being said, it would be a missed opportunity to not talk about the fashion featured this year. My favorite look this year would have to be Lizzo, who wore a black dress with pearls detailing the dress, creating a stunning flow for the whole dress. My other favorite of this year would be Pedro Pascal, who wore black shorts paired with a red shirt and jacket. He rocked a great pair of combat boots that added to the look.
Black and white seemed to be the main color palette for this year, adorned with pearls and other eye-catching embellishments on the outfits. Without a doubt, two people took the show. Doja Cat had facial prosthetics and cat ears that paid tribute to Lagerfeld, but the pawesome looks didn’t stop there. Jared Leto showed up in a hyper-realistic fur suit modeled after a Lagerfeld cat, and if you haven’t seen it, you should.
The Met Gala has many flaws; however, it somehow always delivers some sort of entertainment for the year. From feline looks to pearls, this year was interesting, to say the least. Within the fashion world, there will always be room for improvement, but for now, I will work with what they offer. Happy finals week, and hopefully, the sun welcomes us into a new season.
