The Bennies took on St. Scholastica for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 3. The team took advantage of one big inning to earn the win. CSB scored four runs in the fifth inning in the 7-1 win against the Saints. The game came to a pause due to heavy snowfall in the area. It is yet to be determined when game two will be played.
The Bennies took an early lead on the Saints due to first inning runs. Junior Gabby Spencer started the inning with an at bat where she was walked and then stole second and third before finally scoring on a pop fly from sophomore Bryn Carlstrom. Later in the inning, first-year Megan Erickson struck out but reached first on a dropped third strike. She then came around to score on a single from first-year Addy Bowne.
The Saints earned a run from a lone homer at the top of the fourth, but the Bennies came back stronger with insurance runs in the fifth with four hits. Carlstrom, Bowne and Swoboda all got two hits for the Bennies, who had nine total hits, and senior Sheridan Glashan had two RBIs.
“We find success best when we string hits together and have confidence when we step up to the plate and on defense [and] also when we are just having fun and being highly energized and loud,” Swoboda said.
Junior Elly Novak picked up her eighth win of the season after giving up a single run and six hits in seven innings of work. She struck out a total of eight batters.
“What has really kept my opponents from scoring is really focusing on hitting my spots when I’m pitching. Getting more movement on the ball is also another factor that keeps the batters guessing as to where the ball might go,” Novak said.
The Bennies have a busy week with home games on Friday and Sunday against Carleton and Gustavus. They also hit the road Saturday with a game against Augsburg.
The team was originally scheduled to play two games this weekend, but due to weather conditions and wet fields they stayed home for a single doubleheader. A game against St. Olaf was supposed to be Saturday, April 2, but got rescheduled to Thursday, April 21.
