Tennis hopeful for MIAC play
Bennies look to stay in playoff hunt as the spring season kicks off. Fredericks, the lone senior, hopes to build positive momentum.
The CSB tennis team is ready to get the spring portion of their schedule under way after an exciting Fall season saw the team go 4-1 with their only loss coming from division II Southwest Minnesota State.
Sophomore Jane Bodensteiner (3-0) and junior Grace Lee (2-0) went undefeated in singles play this fall while senior Lily Fredericks, first year Ashley Tarrolly and first year Greta Nesbit all went 3-1.
The fall season also saw Tarrolly and Fredericks compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional in doubles. The pair made it to the quarterfinals in doubles play before falling.
The tennis team is relatively young with only one senior this year in Fredericks. The senior captain is hoping to make an impact on the team. “[I want] to be a great captain for the team and a very positive leader. I also just want to soak in every moment and enjoy it, as it is sadly my last season since I am a senior. I want us to take advantage of every opportunity to be the best players we can possibly be throughout the long season,” Fredericks said.
After going 2-7 in MIAC play last year the Bennies are hoping to stay in the playoff hunt this year.
“We are preparing by trying to build super positive momentum at the start of the season for this to snowball into the rest of the season and into the tough matches when we really need positivity and energy. Practice has been super fun despite it being early mornings and we are very goal oriented right now,” Fredericks said.
The team is coming off an 8-1 victory over the University of Northwestern on Saturday and heads to Winona on Sunday to play Upper Iowa University.
The team then plays MIAC opponents Concordia and Saint Mary’s before hosting a group of non-conference opponents Luther College and Wisconsin River Falls. The team then heads to Miami over the spring break before heading into MIAC conference action.
