New SJU Dean of Students appointed

St. John’s University has announced the successful completion of a national search for its new dean of students, with Amanda Erdman emerging as the chosen candidate. Erdman will fill the position previously left vacant by former Dean of Students Mike Connolly.

Erdman previously served as the assistant dean of students at SJU since August 2022.

Prior to her time at SJU, Erdman held various positions in residence life and student development across several institutions of higher education. Her most recent position was as the director of residence life at Augsburg University. She has also contributed her expertise to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, the University of Northern Iowa, Eastern Illinois University and Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During her undergrad experience Erdman also worked in student services, giving her 20 plus years of experience.

“My career began as a hall director, and I haven’t looked back since. It became fulfilling work that led me to several campuses before joining the Dean’s team at SJU.” Erdman said via email.

Erdman has been recognized for her adeptness in administrative and management practices, including spearheading innovative outreach programs and services to support at-risk student populations.

“Throughout my career I have enjoyed working with humans during times of incredible personal growth and transformation.” Erdman said. “A corner stone of my career is education and advising, and the unique individual transformation brought with it.”

Erdman is well-versed in supervising and advising both student and professional staff, and she brings extensive experience in addressing behavioral interventions and managing emergency situations involving students. Erdman looks forward to working with the Student Development team and partners throughout CSB+SJU.

“Sophisticated, inclusive, compelling, and comprehensive student experience, student leadership, involvement, and engagement will be key.” Erdman said. I am very interested in focusing on opportunities that foster community and connection between faculty, staff, and the monastic community with our students.”

Erdman expresses her excitement with her new role.

“I am an optimist at the core. I believe in the power of human connections and the importance of learn.” Erdman said.

With the hope to help foster connection and experiences to strengthen the already strong bonds at CSB+SJU Erdman feels like she can make a lasting difference through her work.
