DJ’s put a new spin on campus

From what began last spring as a few student’s passion for music, Campus DJ’s, now with 25 members, is the newest sensation to hit the CSB/SJU community. The group strives to increase appreciation for electronic, dance and other cultural music, while following the Benedictine values. It teaches its members music, sound and visual production skills. Campus DJ’s entertains at any and all CSB/SJU events. The price for booking the talented group? Absolutely nothing.

“We wanted to provide an entertaining option for people, especially those not yet 21, to stay on campus and enjoy themselves dancing,”  Campus DJ’s President Matt Brolsma said. “And by not charging other clubs, we are upholding the Benedictine value of stewardship.”

Calling it the “Night Life Initiative,” the club aims to provide free dances bi-monthly in a Brother Willie’s Pub or O’Connell’s type venue, as well as a possible post-Pinestock party. This goal is in addition to providing free services to clubs whenever requested.

Asia Club, JEC and Orientation Fall 2010 are some of the organizations that have already taken advantage of booking the Campus DJ’s. Alison Gresbeck, Orientation co-Coordinator, expressed her content with the club.

“They bring so much more to an event than music,” Gresback said. “With lights, personable DJ’s and honored requests, Campus DJ’s are sure to bring the life to the party.”

With bi-monthly meetings in addition to booked performances, members can be as active as they want by joining one of three levels: executive, active or public membership. Although each level calls for a different amount of dedication to the club, Brolsma stressed the importance of giving the same music education to each and every member.

“We want to inspire and encourage student involvement by offering a new and exciting skill to learn,” Brolsma said.

The group’s members have also created a group called I.E.A, Increasing Electronic Awareness, which travels off-campus to provide DJ services at locations such as Sal’s Bar and Grill, and local wedding receptions.  In addition, you can catch the club hosting their very own radio show called “Subliminal Broadcast,” airing every Saturday afternoon from 1-3 p.m. on CSB/SJU station, KJMB.  Campus DJ’s also has a Facebook fan page that provides links to music sites, club information and booking request forms.

Campus DJ’s is yet another example of passionate students making their dreams a reality both within and outside the CSB/SJU community. Describing DJing as an intricate science requiring strategy, patience and understanding, Brolsma stresses the importance and value in music being more than just a form of entertainment, but more of an experience; an experience he hopes to continue to provide to the CSB/SJU community.
